Text Style for Photoshop: Achieving Realistic Glass and Plastic Effects

In this tutorial, we will explore a technique to create realistic glass and plastic text styles using Adobe Photoshop. By leveraging the power of layer styles and gradient strokes, we can achieve a stunning visual effect that brings our text to life.

To begin, open a new image with a white background. For this demonstration, I've set my image size to 9inx5in, 200 dpi, RGB with a white background. Select the type mask tool and enter your desired text selection.

Next, create a new layer above the background layer. Apply the plastic wrap filter to both layers using the following settings: duplicate the active layer, set it to Overlay mode, and merge down (Command/Control+'). This may seem faint at first, but trust me – we'll get back to this later.

Now, let's add a Blue-Yellow-Blue stroke to the inside of our text. For this effect, I've changed the Shadow mode to 'Screen' and applied a light blue color. You can see my settings in the image below:

To further enhance the glassy or plastic effect, we'll apply a gradient stroke using the Layer Styles command. With the default black setting, you can achieve a simple bevel effect with a shadow. However, for this tutorial, I want to work with lighter variations.

For the final touch, create a new layer and select the type mask tool once more. Apply the Blue-Yellow-Blue stroke to the inside of your text, using the settings shown above. The result should be a stunning glassy or plastic effect that adds depth and realism to your text.
